The construction of Noida International Airport, which was initially expected to commence flight operations by the end of 2024, has faced a delay. The airport has now announced that it plans to launch services in April 2025.
New Launch Timeline
The delay in the airport's construction has shifted the projected start date for commercial operations to April 2025. A statement released on Monday clarified, "In view of the current construction status, we expect to begin commercial operations by the end of April 2025." This delay highlights the complexities and challenges inherent in large-scale infrastructure projects.
Work Status: Advanced Stage Construction
The construction work on Noida International Airport is currently in an advanced stage. Key components such as the runway, passenger terminal, and control tower are well underway. The airport authorities are working closely with their EPC contractor, Tata Projects Ltd, along with other stakeholders to ensure the continued momentum of construction activities.
To ensure operational readiness, concessions for ground handling, commercial area operations, and crucial maintenance contracts have already been awarded. This proactive approach aims to streamline the transition from construction to full operational status once the airport is completed.
Infrastructure: Capacity and Location
Once completed, the first phase of Noida International Airport will have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers and manage 96,400 flights annually. The airport is being built across 1,334 hectares at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddha Nagar district. Its strategic location is approximately 72 kilometres from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, 52 kilometres from Noida, and 130 kilometers from Agra, making it a pivotal addition to the region's transportation infrastructure.
Contractor Profile: Zurich Airport International AG
The foundation stone for Noida International Airport was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021. The design of the airport draws inspiration from Switzerland's Zurich Airport and is being constructed by Zurich Airport International AG. This company, which manages ten airports worldwide, including Zurich in Switzerland and Noida International Airport in India, has a notable history in the aviation sector. Previously, Zurich Airport International AG held a 17% stake in Bengaluru airport before selling its remaining stake to Fairfax in 2016.
Future Plans: Concession Period and Airline Partnerships
The concession period for Jewar airport began on October 1, 2021, and will run for 40 years. This long-term agreement ensures that the airport's operations and development are sustained over an extended period. As part of its operational readiness plan, Noida International Airport has entered into partnerships with multiple airlines to ensure a robust flight schedule from the outset.
Notably, the low-cost carrier IndiGo is set to be the launch carrier. This partnership is seen as a significant milestone in the airport's preparation for operational activities. The inclusion of IndiGo and other airlines is expected to boost the airport's connectivity and enhance its appeal to both domestic and international travelers.

With its strategic location, substantial capacity, and strong airline partnerships, Noida International Airport is poised to become a key player in India's aviation landscape upon its completion.
The involvement of Zurich Airport International AG and partnerships with major airlines like IndiGo underscore the project's potential for success and its future role in enhancing regional connectivity.
