Government to Transform 40 Lesser-Known Indian Destinations into Tourist Hotspots With Rs 3,295 Crore Investment

The government has approved plans to develop 40 lesser-known destinations across India, with a total investment of over ₹3,295 crore spanning 23 states. This initiative aims to transform these locations into significant tourist attractions and promote a more balanced distribution of visitors nationwide. Under the Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) program, the Ministry of Tourism has issued guidelines to support the creation of iconic tourism hubs.

States were invited to propose potential projects by October 15, 2024. By the deadline, the Ministry received 87 proposals worth over ₹8,000 crore. Following a thorough evaluation, 40 projects were selected based on SASCI guidelines. The approved projects include sites like Rang Ghar in Sivasagar (Assam), Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa (Bihar), a Town Square in Porvorim (Goa), and Orchha in Madhya Pradesh.

The initiative offers interest-free loans with a 50-year repayment term, enabling states to develop world-class tourist destinations. According to the Ministry, this investment is expected to enhance tourism infrastructure, stimulate local economies, create jobs, and promote sustainable development.

"This program is designed to reduce overcrowding at popular sites and ensure visitors explore lesser-known destinations," the Ministry stated. "Our focus is on elevating the tourism experience while driving economic growth and sustainability."

States are required to complete these projects within two years, with funding to be allocated by March 2026.
