Hajj Journey Delayed, Not Denied: Libyan Pilgrim’s Faith Grounds Plane Twice
Dubai: For most, the pilgrimage to Mecca is a sacred journey marked by prayer, patience, and spiritual preparation. But for Amer Al Mahdi Mansour Al Gaddafi, a young Libyan man with his heart set on performing Hajj this year, the path to the holy city unfolded as a dramatic testament to faith and fate — one that would momentarily stop an aircraft in its tracks.
It began like any other departure. At the airport, the air buzzed with the energy of pilgrims, all dressed in white, bound for Mecca to fulfill one of Islam’s most profound obligations. But as Amer approached immigration, a shadow from the past intervened. His surname — Al Gaddafi — still flagged in some international systems years after Libya’s unrest, triggered security concerns that halted him at the counter.
His group moved ahead. The gate closed. The engines started. But Amer stood firm. “I will not leave this airport unless it’s for Hajj,” he declared.
Moments later, the flight that had left without him was forced to return due to a technical malfunction. Passengers were reboarded after repairs, only for the aircraft to experience a second issue, grounding it once more.
What happened next is already being told like legend.
According to those on board, the captain — visibly moved — announced: “I swear I won’t fly again unless Amer is with us on this plane.”
Authorities swiftly cleared Amer. On the third attempt, now with the determined pilgrim seated among his fellow travelers, the flight departed peacefully, as if the skies themselves had been waiting.
The tale went viral, with many interpreting the series of events as divine intervention. Amer, soft-spoken and humble in later interviews, simply said: “I only wanted to go to Hajj. And I believed that if it was written for me, no force could prevent it.”
His journey, delayed twice but never denied, is now seen by many as a powerful reminder: the road to Hajj is not always straight — but for those who believe, it is always open.
