On June 28th, the 'Bodhi Yatra' conclave held in New Delhi brought to light the spiritual and cultural significance of Uttar Pradesh as a premier Buddhist pilgrimage destination. Organised by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, the event celebrated the profound journey of Lord Buddha, emphasising the state's pivotal role in Buddhist history and its burgeoning tourism potential.
Historical Significance: Birthplace of Buddhism
Uttar Pradesh holds immense historical significance as the birthplace of Buddhism. As Minister of Tourism and Culture, Uttar Pradesh, Jaiveer Singh noted, "Fortunately, all the places from the birth of Lord Buddha to his education, attainment of knowledge, preaching and religious awakening campaigns and Mahaparinirvana (death) are located here." This geographical concentration of sacred sites includes key locations such as Sankisa, Sarnath, Shravasti, Kapilvastu, Kaushambi, and Kushinagar.
Commemorating Buddha's Legacy
The conclave commenced with a captivating presentation by the Special Secretary of Uttar Pradesh's Department of Tourism, highlighting the state's rich history, culture, and heritage associated with Buddhism. She remarked, "Uttar Pradesh, with its rich religious diversity, continues to inspire and uplift those who seek a deeper understanding of life and enlightenment." This presentation not only showcased the spiritual significance of these sites but also outlined investment opportunities aimed at boosting tourism infrastructure and attracting foreign investment.
Vision and Recognition
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture emphasised India's role as the "land of Buddha," promoting peace, truth, non-violence, and compassion worldwide. He commended Uttar Pradesh's efforts under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of developing tourist circuits, particularly the Buddha Circuit. "The Uttar Pradesh government has undertaken significant steps to place the state on the world map of Buddhist heritage," he remarked.
Cultural Diplomacy and International Relations
The event was graced by ambassadors from various nations, underscoring India's strong international ties and cultural diplomacy efforts. Discussions included initiatives to foster cultural exchanges and promote foreign direct investment (FDI) in Uttar Pradesh's tourism sector. The Principal Secretary of Uttar Pradesh's Department of Tourism and Culture highlighted, "We wanted to reveal the spiritual and cultural connection with different countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia and improve cultural diplomacy."
Cultural Extravaganza: Celebrating Buddha's Life
Attendees were treated to a mesmerising cultural show depicting the life of Lord Buddha, from his birth to attaining Mahaparinirvana. This portrayal celebrated the foundation of Buddhism and highlighted its deep-rooted historical, cultural, and spiritual ties with Uttar Pradesh. The cultural program underscored how the Buddhist circuit has become a favored destination for both domestic and international travellers.
Future Prospects: Boosting Tourism
Looking ahead, Uttar Pradesh aims to strengthen its position as a leading tourist destination, having already attained the top spot in domestic tourism. The state government is optimistic about attracting a higher number of international tourists, leveraging its rich Buddhist heritage and investor-friendly policies. "We have already allotted 02 acres of land in Varanasi to Bhutan Govt. for the construction of temples and guest houses," the Principal Secretary noted, signalling proactive steps to enhance tourism infrastructure.
