In a groundbreaking move aimed at enhancing passenger experience and efficiency, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) has inaugurated India's inaugural biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). This innovative system, integrated with the DigiYatra initiative, sets a new standard in airport technology, streamlining the check-in process for domestic passengers flying with Tata Group Airlines from Terminal 2.
Pioneering Technology Implementation
Bengaluru airport has long been at the forefront of technological innovation within the aviation industry. From the introduction of a fully automated 'self-bag drop' system in 2018 to the piloting of DigiYatra in 2019, BIAL has consistently sought to reduce queues and enhance passenger convenience.
Effortless Bag Drop Process
The biometric-enabled self-bag drop process at Bengaluru airport is designed to be seamless and user-friendly. Passengers simply select the option to 'scan your face biometric for baggage drop' at the self-service kiosk. Following this, they are prompted to choose the 'DigiYatra' icon to proceed. Subsequently, passengers are directed to look into the camera while their biometric image is captured.
Once the biometric authentication is complete, the machine retrieves the passengers' flight details and prompts them to declare any dangerous goods they may be carrying. After this declaration, passengers are instructed to place their luggage on the conveyor. The machine then guides them to attach the baggage tag, which can either be generated by the machine itself or printed at a self-kiosk beforehand. Upon confirmation, the bag undergoes measurement, weighing, scanning, and is automatically fed into the baggage handling system. A baggage receipt is generated as confirmation of the successful transaction.
Enhanced Passenger Control and Convenience
The implementation of biometric-enabled self-bag drop not only expedites baggage transactions but also empowers passengers with greater control over their travel experience. By eliminating the need to scan boarding passes, this innovative system simplifies the check-in process, reducing wait times and enhancing overall efficiency.
Future Expansion and Partnerships
While initially available to passengers of Vistara, Air India, and Air India Express at Terminal 2, the biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility is set to be extended to Terminal 1 and other domestic airlines in a phased manner. BIAL has partnered with Materna Group, headquartered in Germany, to implement this cutting-edge technology, ensuring seamless integration and operational efficiency.
Privacy Assurance Amidst Concerns
Despite the revolutionary advancements, privacy concerns have surfaced regarding the data shared with DigiYatra, particularly in light of investigations surrounding former vendor Dataevolve. However, Digi Yatra Foundation has reassured passengers that personally identifiable information is not stored and that Indian users' personal data remains safe and secure.
Global Benchmark in Efficiency
Drawing parallels with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in the United States, where a similar self-bag drop system with biometric ID verification was implemented in 2022, Bengaluru airport aims to replicate the success witnessed in Atlanta. With average processing times reduced to 70 seconds per passenger and bag check time slashed by 30 percent, the biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility sets a new global benchmark in airport efficiency and passenger convenience.
The introduction of India's first biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility at Bengaluru airport marks a significant milestone in the evolution of airport technology and passenger experience. By harnessing the power of biometric authentication and digital innovation, BIAL is spearheading a transformative shift towards a more seamless and efficient travel experience for passengers across India.
