Fly High: Lucknow’s Khurram Nagar-Munshipulia Overbridges Transform Daily Commutes
Lucknow: The long-awaited Khurram Nagar-Munshipulia Overbridges were finally inaugurated on Friday in a grand ceremony attended by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The new infrastructure aims to revolutionize connectivity in the city by reducing congestion and cutting travel time by nearly 70% for thousands of daily commuters.
A Game-Changer for Lakhs of Commuters
Designed to accommodate over 15 lakh daily travelers, the 2.6-kilometer-long flyover is set to drastically ease congestion on some of Lucknow’s busiest roads, including Sitapur Road, Munshipulia, Khurram Nagar, Aliganj, and Jankipuram. Before its completion, commuters spent 40-50 minutes stuck in traffic between Polytechnic and Engineering College; now, the journey will take just 12-15 minutes.
Residents of Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar, Tedhi, Kalyanpur, Ring Road, and Polytechnic are among those expected to benefit most, particularly office-goers, students, and daily commuters.
Hanging Arch Bridge: A Landmark Addition
A key highlight of the project is the Hanging Arch Bridge over Kukrail Nala, India’s first fully concrete suspension bridge spanning 76 meters. This innovative structure not only enhances the architectural beauty of the city but also ensures smoother and safer travel.
Project Expansion & Delays: A Worthwhile Wait
Initially planned as a 1,711-meter flyover, the project was later expanded to 2,611 meters following public demand, especially from Kalyanpur residents. The Khurram Nagar flyover was built at a cost of ₹269 crore, while the 1.9-kilometer Munshipulia flyover came at a price tag of ₹170 crore.
While the project was originally scheduled for completion by March 2024, construction delays, safety enhancements, and the addition of the Hanging Arch Bridge pushed the timeline back by nine months. Officials, however, believe the wait was worthwhile, as the additional measures have ensured a stronger, safer, and more efficient infrastructure.
Flyovers to Boost Economic Growth & Urban Development
Beyond reducing traffic woes, the new overbridges are expected to bolster economic activity, making business hubs more accessible and attracting new investments in the area. Real estate values in Munshipulia, Kalyanpur, and Indira Nagar are also anticipated to rise, thanks to the improved connectivity.
Citizens Welcome the New Infrastructure
Commuters and residents have expressed relief and excitement over the development. Ramesh Verma, a daily commuter, shared, “Earlier, it was a nightmare to cross Munshipulia and Khurram Nagar during peak hours. Now, my travel time has reduced drastically.”
Similarly, college student Priya Sharma remarked, “It used to take almost an hour to reach my college, but now it’s barely 15 minutes! This flyover has truly changed our daily routine.”
What’s Next for Lucknow’s Infrastructure?
With this key milestone achieved, the government is now looking at further expanding the city’s road network. Plans are already in discussion for new flyovers and expressways to accommodate Lucknow’s growing urban population.
For now, Lucknowites can celebrate a major leap forward in connectivity and urban mobility, as the city flies high with its latest infrastructure marvel.
