According to Google's analysis of flight search data, the top 20 destinations for summer 2024 travel have seen some notable shifts compared to the previous year.
The most searched destination on Google Flights for summer 2024 travel is London, moving up from its previous ranking. Paris, set to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, has risen to the second spot. Tokyo has also climbed the rankings, moving up from 8th place to 3rd.
Cancun, which was the second most popular destination in 2023, has dropped to 6th place this year. Other newcomers to the top 20 list include San Juan, Puerto Rico and Madrid, while Chicago and San Francisco have fallen off the list.
The top U.S. destinations continue to be warm-weather spots like Orlando, Las Vegas, and Miami, as well as coastal cities like Los Angeles and Boston. International destinations like Rome, Athens, Dublin, and Barcelona also feature prominently.

According to ABC News, Google collects travel-related insights from mid-January to mid-March from US users to understand the top travel queries leading up to summer. During this period, searches for "travel itinerary" and "solo travel" surged to an all-time high in January, indicating a strong interest in personalised and independent travel experiences. Additionally, the top trending "weekend getaway" destinations included Palm Springs and the Florida Keys, while Napa in California and Key West in Florida were highlighted as popular "romantic getaway" spots. La Romana and Saint John emerged as top trending destinations searched for all-inclusive resorts.
Last year, Google Flights introduced a new feature aimed at assisting travelers in booking more affordable flights. This feature provides guidance on the most budget-friendly period for booking flights, offering insights such as the optimal time to book trips, typically two months before departure, or advising on potential price drops closer to the travel date, empowering travellers to make informed decisions with confidence.
