In a significant event for the city, the iconic Lucknow Mail, often called the “Pride of Lucknow,” has resumed operations from the historic Charbagh Junction after a hiatus of six years. The much-loved train departed for New Delhi on the night of August 15 at 10 PM, marking its grand return. This move has brought joy to frequent travelers, especially VVIPs who often prefer this train for their journeys between Lucknow and Delhi.
To ensure that passengers faced no issues, the train was held at the station for an extra 10 minutes before departure, providing a buffer time for anyone running late. This considerate gesture was appreciated by the passengers, especially those who had last-minute rushes.
6 Years of Absence: A Brief History
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Northern Railway, the Lucknow Mail is being run from Charbagh Junction after a gap of six years. The train was shifted to Lucknow Junction in 2018 due to changes made within the railway's operational divisions. At that time, several originating trains were transferred to Lucknow Junction, including the prestigious Lucknow Mail. However, after much anticipation and demand from the public, the train has now been restored to its original platform at Charbagh Junction.
Despite being away from Charbagh for six years, the Lucknow Mail has maintained its reputation as a reliable, punctual, and preferred mode of transportation for VVIPs and regular passengers alike. It returned to its historical route with style, arriving at New Delhi Junction on August 16, just one minute late, at 6:56 AM – an impressive feat for such a long-distance train.
The Pride of Lucknow: A VVIP Favourite
The Lucknow Mail, running on the 12229/30 route, is one of the most prominent trains operated by Northern Railway's Lucknow division. This daily train connects Lucknow to New Delhi and has been a reliable choice for decades. What sets it apart from other trains is its consistent punctuality and its ability to cater to an elite passenger base. For years, the train has been the first choice for VVIPs, officials, and high-profile individuals traveling between Lucknow and Delhi.
Known for its comfort, cleanliness, and timely service, the train has built a loyal following. It leaves Lucknow daily at 10 PM, making its journey through the night and reaching New Delhi early the next morning, making it a convenient option for those who need to be in the capital city for work or personal engagements.
Routine Maintenance and Timely Arrivals
Upon reaching New Delhi, the Lucknow Mail, designated as 12230 for its return journey, departs for Lucknow in the evening and typically reaches its destination by around 7 AM the next morning. Once it arrives, it undergoes routine maintenance to ensure its readiness for the next journey. The train is sent to the salon siding at Charbagh Junction, where it is cleaned and inspected. This maintenance process, which includes detailed cleaning and washing, takes around four to five hours.
Northern Railway's Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Sachindra Mohan Sharma, emphasized the importance of this train, stating that the Lucknow Mail is affectionately referred to as the “Pride of Lucknow” due to its long-standing service and significance to the city's residents. The attention to detail in its upkeep reflects the commitment of the railway staff to maintain its prestigious reputation.
100 Years of Service: A Historical Gem
The history of the Lucknow Mail is rich and storied, with roots going back nearly 100 years. It has long been an essential part of Lucknow's connection to Delhi, serving the people and the city through various eras. According to Sachindra Mohan Sharma, the train has undergone several changes throughout its existence, adapting to the evolving needs of passengers and the railways. In 2018, due to logistical challenges and station conditions in the North Eastern region, the train was temporarily shifted to Lucknow Junction. Now, after overcoming those obstacles, the train has finally returned to its rightful place at Charbagh.
In its early days, the train ran as 303/304 Down before being renumbered as 4229/4230, during which it gained significant fame and popularity. In 2005, with the train being upgraded to superfast status, its number was changed to 1229, which it holds to this day. Despite the changes, one thing has remained constant: the Lucknow Mail’s exceptional service and the fondness passengers have for it.
Revival on Independence Day
Fittingly, the train resumed its original service on August 15, India’s Independence Day, a day filled with pride and patriotism. For the residents of Lucknow, this revival was symbolic, marking the return of a piece of their heritage. The train now departs once again from Platform 1 of Charbagh, as it did for many years, carrying with it not just passengers but also the weight of history and tradition.
As passengers boarded the Lucknow Mail for the first time in six years at Charbagh Junction, there was a palpable sense of nostalgia and excitement in the air. The return of the train has been welcomed with open arms, not just by VVIPs but also by regular travelers who missed the convenience and charm of boarding at Charbagh.
The Future of Lucknow Mail
With its glorious past and the promise of a bright future, the Lucknow Mail continues to be a symbol of excellence in the Indian Railways. Its return to Charbagh Junction signals a new chapter in its long history. Passengers can now once again enjoy the ease of travel that this train offers, with the reassurance that it will continue to deliver on its promise of punctuality, comfort, and service.
As Northern Railway continues to improve its services and infrastructure, the Lucknow Mail remains a testament to the enduring power of tradition, reliability, and the unbreakable connection between Lucknow and its beloved train.
